THE STABLE OF STONE

A Christmas Play for Infants

by Geraldine Smith

music by Robert Smith

The older Infants, dressed as shepherds or traders, take their places on stage and sing a suitable carol (eg Come and Join the Celebrations). The narrator walks to his/her place.

The older infants disperse to their places (at the sides or in front of the stage or acting area).

Narrator I'd like to tell you a story............. It all started a very long time ago in a little town called Nazareth. One day, in a modest house, a girl called Mary was busy working when she had a feeling she was not alone.

Narrator She looked up and saw a beautiful person who seemed to be standing in a pool of light. Mary was frightened and fell down, hiding her face. But the angel, for that was who the person was, tried to reassure her.

Narrator Although Mary did not understand how this could happen, she agreed to do God's will and be the mother of his son. (exit angel) Then the angel went away and Mary went to tell Joseph, who was going to be her husband. Together they made plans for the new baby . But there came a new proclamation from Caesar Augustus that everyone should be counted. Each man was to go to the place of his birth and register his name. Joseph had been born in Bethlehem, so, not long before Mary's baby was due, Mary and Joseph had to make the long journey to Bethlehem. They travelled with lots of other people for safety and the journey took many days. When they arrived in Bethlehem, they were very tired
